When charging prices might be cheaper on Sundays

As Energy Service Providers, businesses have the wish to be able to set up more flexible pricing on their stations due to several factors (i.e. electricity prices, traffic, competitors, and so on). This means that, depending on the time of the day / week, charging tariffs will change. For example: charging your car in the early morning will be cheaper than during high traffic hours where everyone needs to rush to work.

Usually, each charging point typically has only one default tariff. With the business requirement above, multiple alternative tariffs need to be added automatically when the time changes. This needs to be communicated to EV drivers in a clear and understandable way to avoid confusion and to help them estimate the charging cost correctly.

Understanding the big picture and accommodating for worst case scenarios

  • Working closely with the development team to understand the technical limit, what we can do with the current APIs set up, ensuring that we can provide timely data to users without slowing them down.
  • Working closely with the B2B design team to understand the logic and ensure consistency from admin to users.
  • Understand from a business perspective what developments we might need to include in the future as our business grows and/or law regulations change.
  • Evaluate the current design to identify any existing pain points that could be improved at the same time so that we can optimize our resources.
Research board
  • Ideate quickly & validate design with users and other stakeholders
  • Challenges that need to be addressed:
    • How to convey quickly and clearly to EV drivers which tariffs are applied to them?
    • How to help drivers understand that tariffs will change depending on the time of the day?
    • How to provide more information without overloading users with too much info?

Turning complex business ideas into simplistic user interfaces

Pricing display is an essential part of the station view, where the conversion happens (customers make a decision to charge). We tested many design variations before releasing the final design, which satisfied the following criteria:

  • Clear and simple design
  • Users immediately understand which tariff applies to them now
  • Users understand the structure of charging cost, which is a total sum of energy cost, time-based feeds, and session fee (if applicable)
  • Users understand that tariffs may change and can use the information to plan their charging
Final solution (from left to right): static tariff, dynamic tariff, dynamic tariff with weekly view

Two metrics were applied to measure the success of this project:

  • On B2C side: customer complaints on pricing structure has decreased significantly by 40%.
  • On B2B side: we saw an increase of 24% of number of transactions once the feature is adapted and enabled from our customers.
